Freemark Abbey Merlot 2007

by Lauren on November 16, 2010

I feel like Merlot gets a bad rep especially after the movie Bottle Shock. But to be honest I really like Merlot. I love how smooth, and velvety it can be, and I really love how chocolatey it can be.

I tasted the Freemark Abbey Merlot the other day, and it was right up my alley. It had all these notes of dark cherry, red currant and spiced fruit on the front, but then it had this awesome baking spice and milk chocolate quality on the back end.

I actually have a thing for big bold wines, and the Freemark Abbey Merlot is bigger than most Merlots. I don’t like when a wine is thin and watery, and this particular one offers a lot of structure with a nice smooth finish. I could see this paired with a nice steak that has a spice rub or even a grilled pork loin with a brown sugar pork rub. It could also be very tasty with some sort of brisket according to my co-workers. ;-) This is definitely my kind of wine.

Are you a Merlot fan?

Wow, I am usually not a Merlot fan, but maybe I am just trying the wrong ones! You description sounds like the type of wines I like, I will have to give it a try!

Why did we go to wine country together? I know soooo little about wines, that I’m not sure what wine I’m actually a fan of drinking the most.

I love merlot! They actually talked about Bottle Shock on my wine tour, apparently they filmed some of it at one vineyard I was at. So awesome that you are so knowledgeable about wine, I’m jealous.

Im personally not a fan of merlot, typically. But I think it deserves a second chance – especially after this review.
