Decadence

Before I tell you about my eats I have to remind you one more time to GO ENTER MY GIVEAWAY! CLICK HERE and comment. You have until 3pm today EST.

Ok, so after all those healthy fruits and veggies yesterday, I had a somewhat decadent dinner. Not planned though. We got a doggie bag of food from Chris’ family, and it was filled with rich butternut squash soup, smoked salmon, pate, potato gratin, and chocolate mousse. YUM! Thankfully I was not really in the mood for anything but a little of the soup. So I had, what seems to be the only dinner I’ve been eating this week, another grilled cheese and tomato panini with a side of soup. I’m a little embarrassed to say I’ve eaten this three nights in a row, but its just SO good!

Again made with Annie’s Honey Mustard, 2% milk provolone, and a tomato on sourdough bread, this combination is to die for! I love the sweetness of the mustard with the tartness of tomato. And I love how crispy the bread gets in the panini press.

The soup was amazing as usual. This is one of Patrice’s signature dishes. It is extremely rich and velvety so you only need a little bit. But the flavor is like no other. I know it takes him a very long time to make, but it is worth it. This soup is outstanding! There is some spice, some sweetness, some creaminess, it is really one of the best soups I’ve ever had.

A little later Chris and I split a little bit of the Mexican candy I tweeted about yesterday, and a spoonful of chocolate mousse. The mousse is so thick and rich, that you only need a spoonful.

We went to bed with the snow falling and woke up to a beautiful winter wonderland. I could just sit and stare at it all day.

Right now the snow is such a pain with my boot, crutches, and scooter, but it is still beautiful to look at. After I packed my lunch I thought I would try a new breakfast for me. WHEATBERRIES! I’ve heard all about the health benefits of this grain, so I was pretty excited to try them out. Here is some information I took from the eHow website.

Wheat berries are the unprocessed kernel complete with endosperm, bran and germ. All the nutrients that manufacturers remove from white bread are here, including fiber, folic acid, protein, B-complex vitamins and vitamin E. Wheat berries are versatile enough to eat at breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I found out how to make them here, and had them in the fridge for a few days. I had no idea how to prepare them as a meal so I just went out on a limb. I put some of the grains in a bowl, added a little unsweetened vanilla almond milk , 2 Tbs The Bees Knees, and heated in the microwave for 2 minutes. After mixing all the peanut butter up I added some toppings.

  • unsweetened and unsulphured coconut
  • sliced almonds
  • dried currants

And because it’s almost Valentine’s Day I only thought it was appropriate to use my V-day mug.

This is what the concotion looks like all mixed up.

It was actually pretty good. The wheatberries have an interesting texture and almost pop when you bite them. I can’t explain it. Very interesting, but not bad for a hearty morning breakfast.

In Other News-I had ordered 3 Michael Pollan books on Amazon and they finally came yesterday. I’ve heard so much about these books, and would like to see what they are all about.

I can’t wait to read them. I love adding interesting books to my collection.

Well I’m off to work. I have an extremely busy day and a busy rest of the week ahead of me. Have a happy snowy day!

Just found your blog today, and I can’t wait to keep reading it. I love traveling and I just lived a little vicariously through your photographs ( in the travel section)

Anyway, I love Michael Pollan’s in Defense of Food. I’m curious to see how his Food Rules differs from his other two books, and if it would be worthwhile to buy.

I’m interested to hear what you think of the Pollan books. I’ve been listening to Omnivore’s Dilemma on CD during my commute and reading In Defense of Food when I have some spare time. He is speaking at Goucher in April if you are interested. Tickets are free! You just have to email the box office and they’ll put them on hold for you.
