Tonight I met my BFF Kelly for our weekly dinner/drinks date. We try to get together once a week to have a girls night and just relax and have some good food, but sometimes it doesn’t always work out and we may go months with out seeing each other. Luckily lately we have been able to see each other almost every week. I love just chatting and enjoying good food and wine with her. She used to be SUCH a picky eater, but now she is more adventurous than I am, and gets me to try all these new things. She is the one that introduced me to one of my favorite restaurants, that we visit often, Levante’s. But tonight we decided to try a new place. We went to a small quaint Italian restaurant called Red Tomato Cafe.
The night started out iffy. Of course we had some bread to start, and I had an Italian Merlot. The bread was just plain white bread, nothing special, and the Merlot I chose was horrible. I have never really had many Italian Merlot’s, but this one was AWFUL!
I of course had to get a second glass, and this time I chose the California Merlot. MUCH better! Now that’s what I’m talking about. Unfortunately the prices were a little steep for the amount of wine the serve you, but I still ordered a second glass anyways.
We decided to split an appetizer and a pizza. We order the Bruschetta for an appetizer, and the Verdure for a pizza. The Bruchetta came with 4 slices of Italian bread topped with a mixture of tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and seasoning, and topped with fresh mozzarella. Despite the plain bread and bad Merlot earlier, this bruschetta was awesome. So flavorful and fresh tasting. I loved every single bite. And they were pretty big pieces too, which allowed the flavor to go on and on.
The pizza we ordered originally came with eggplant, carmalized onions, portabella mushrooms, and tomatoes. We decided to do half eggplant and half with no eggplant because Kelly isn’t a huge fan, and I love the stuff. Once our pizza arrived I knew it was going to be right up my alley.
Boy was I right! Brick oven pizza is my all time fave! The flavors went so well together, and I absolutely loved the sweetness of the onions with the other veggies. Oh man was I in heaven. We each had 3 medium slices, and it was just enough. Not stuffed, but just full enough. But of course we left a little room for dessert. I mean how could we not when the waitress told us how amazing the Tiramisu was.
It was quite a beautiful looking tiramisu, and it was good, but nothing that knocked my socks off. It was very sweet, but that is about it. It would probably have been better if we had just passed. It was added calories that wasn’t worth it.
The Red Tomato Cafe was a fun place to meet up after work for dinner and drinks. It was a small cozy restaurant with only a few tables, and I loved the huge brick oven in the middle. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food was pretty darn good. The prices were reasonable too. Kelly and I split a pizza, appetizer, and a dessert, but it was just enough food, and it didn’t break the bank. I really liked this restaurant, and I know I will be visiting again soon!
