Every month I pick a wine that really knocks my socks off. I enjoy many types of wine, but I pick one that I am entirely in love with to feature for that month. This month I chose Orin Swift’s The Prisoner 2008.

The Prisoner is probably one of my very favorite wines. It was first introduced to me by my brother’s girlfriend, and now I can’t get enough of it. It is a highly allocated wine, and has a huge following. People ask about it year round, and this vintage was finally released in our store on Halloween, October 31, 2009. Winemaker Dave Phinney made the 2008 a deep, dark, garnet color with a bright red band at the rim. As usual right at release, the wine is a little shy aromatically, but scents of ripe berry and cherry take off after a minute or so. The wine is big and broad in the mouth with great weight, length, and structure – and that structure is needed to support the big fruit that pumps out from first to last. Soft tannin supports the juicy, sweet, finish. An outstanding wine if you ask me. And perfect for this time of year.
